South Bend TV Station Airs Live Preview of Shipshewana Kite Festival

In anticipation of this Saturday's Kite Komotion event in Shipshewana, WNDU Channel 16 of South Bend did an early morning interview with our club vice president, Lynn Warner. You can view recordings of both segments below.

Kudos to Lynn for getting up at "oh-dark-thirty" to talk with the reporter and, most important, for a job well done!

Please be patient. The videos might require some time to load. Alternatively, view them on the TV station's website.

Shipshewana Kite Komotion Festival Bigger than Ever

More kites than ever will be in the air in Shipshewana for the Kite Komotion festival April 27. A sizable contingent from the Wisconsin Kiters kite club plans to bring their fantastic single-line display kites to add to the big kites Daryl Waters has flown for the past two years.

In addition, the Hoosier Kitefliers Society kite workshop team is geared up to help as many as 400 children create their own sled kites.

The WindJammers International Kite team will return this year, with their stacks of Dyna Kite diamond-shaped dual-line sport kites.

Pairs teams Fire and Ice and Blues Brothers will also perform. Fire and Ice, comprised of Kathy Brinnehl and Paul Koepke, won the 2012 national championship in the master's pairs category. Paul won the 2012 national championship in the experienced individual ballet category. Spencer Schubbe and American Kitefliers Association Regional Director Steve Rothwell make up the Blues Brothers team.

Solo kite ballet fliers Dan Newman and Mark Ledvina will also perform. Plus, Dave "Mr. Incredible" Bush will fly his enormous "Thor's Hammer" 13-foot-wide delta sport kite.

For spectators who want to try their own hands at sport kite flying, Kite Komotion will include a free "learn to fly" field. HKS expert instructors will loan sport kites to beginners and teach them how to fly.

Dan Newman's kite will drop a bag full of candy from the sky onto eager kids waiting below. Kids will also love the array of bubbles created by bubble experts Tom and Kathy Deck.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 760 S. Van Buren St. (behind Hostetler's Hudson Museum), Shipshewana, Indiana.
